About Us

Use Your Outside Voice started as a Facebook page and side-project of Jill Smokler, founder of the web site Scary Mommy. In the run up to the 2016 election, the page shared articles and graphics to inform and get out the vote. From just over 1500 Facebook followers in November of 2016, Use Your Outside Voice has grown explosively. It has launched viral memes, channeled traffic to articles about important issues, and kept its community active, engaged, laughing, and crying together.

We are now a community focused on educating and mobilizing women to bring about change in our national, state, and local governments. We want to share the voices and experiences of those often left out of the political decision-making processes.

What We Do

We know the news can be overwhelming. So much happens every day. We’ll help you learn about the issues you care about.

Find out how you can get involved in activism nationally and in your own community.

Get support through our community to help you navigate the social and political climate today. It’s time to stop being overwhelmed and start using your OUTSIDE VOICE to make change.

We’re starting a new Facebook group! Sign up to get an invitation! This group is for discussing critical issues affecting our communities and national politics, for sharing ways to bring about change at all levels of government and policy, and for supporting each other during these challenging times.

“I’m using my outside voice” isn’t just a slogan. It’s a commitment to bring who we are and what we believe in out into the open. To refuse to let hate and bigotry win. To step beyond our comfort zones and to stand up for what is right and decent.

As a business, Outside Voice LLC is a for-profit philanthropic model. It is important to us that all aspects of our business strive towards the ideals that we represent with our content.50% of our profits go directly to get more women of color and other Outside Voices elected to public office.
